The electric vehicle industry started in India in 2005. Most people had a positive outlook when it started. But soon the electric vehicles industry ran into problems. The initial problems persisted in the industry for quite some time. There were some problems on the policy front. Some of the initial industry players failed to deliver on their promises. Many people perceived electric vehicles that it did not have sufficient space. As a result most people thought that electric vehicles were good only for short distances. One more important factor why the E rickshaw industry is in decline now is the fact the most of the E rickshaw player except few like Mahindra, kinetic are from non automotive background. they were not aware that selling the auto vehicle is a big responsibility. An auto player need to offer warranty, must have R & D team to learn from field failure and keep improving the quality consistently. Also must have good infrastructure for servicing and selling. All this need patience and need money to keep on invest. Many time the service and warranty cost is even more than the selling price of E rickshaw as E rickshaw cost itself is very low at Factory. Dealer started spoiling the market by enjoying huge margin on sell and passed the responsibility to manufacturer. All this started disappointing the E rickshaw manufacturer.
In near future it seems that only few E Rickshaw maker will survive who are improving the quality. Our study and customer interaction says that in almost all E rickshaws the chassis are breaking, harness is burning, there are fire incident while charging, battery blast, axle rod break, differential gear wearing, non consistency in part quality which making part replacement impossible.
If E rickshaw manufacture want to survive then they must look for long term perspective and keep improving the quality
